Health Network of the University has grown from a series of mergers between our existing hospitals, as we adjusted and changed to accommodate our growing and changing patient community in and around the GTA. In 1986, the Toronto Western Hospital merged with the Toronto General Hospital becoming, respectively, Toronto Division Toronto General Hospital and Toronto Western Division. The January 1, 1998, the Toronto Hospital merged with the Ontario Cancer Institute / Princess Margaret Hospital, and in April 1999, the name was officially changed to the Health Network of the University .
The July 1, 2011, UHN integrated with the Rehabilitation Institute of Toronto, a movement that has expanded physically us eight points of the city, and allows us to better serve our patients to bring acute hospital care with care rehabilitation following hospitalization so often. The Toronto Rehabilitation Institute was created by the merger of the Rehabilitation Institute of Toronto, the Toronto Rehabilitation Centre and Lyndhurst hospital in 1998 .
The Toronto Rehabilitation Centre was founded in 1922 to meet the rehabilitation needs of the wounded Canadians in the First World War. It was the first independent rehabilitation center in North America and later became home to the first cardiac outpatient program in Ontario. In 1997, the Rehabilitation Institute of Toronto was created by the merger of the hospitals in the Queen Elizabeth and Hillcrest Hospital Queen Elizabeth first opened as a center for chronic and long-term care in 1874, while the Hillcrest Hospital began first operations in 1886, providing long care services and gradually adding -TERM as occupational therapy. Lyndhurst hospital opened in 1945 to provide rehabilitation services for veterans of World War II who had suffered spinal cord injuries. It was the first rehabilitation hospital of its kind in North America and soon became internationally renowned.
In 2011, Toronto Rehab integrated with the Health Network of the University, to become our fourth and tenth hospital program .
